Insider Spotlight
The Ironman 70.3, covering 70.3 miles of swimming, cycling, and running, will take place on March 22, 2026.
This marks the fifth time Davao City will host the globally recognized triathlon, drawing local and foreign athletes to a course that runs along the Davao City Coastal Road with Mount Apo as a backdrop.
Why it matters
For Aboitiz, the sponsorship aligns with its broader commitment to community development and sustainability in areas where the group operates. For Davao City, the event supports tourism, global branding, and the promotion of an active lifestyle among residents.
Since 2018, Aboitiz has sponsored Ironman events in Davao as part of what it describes as a long-term partnership with the city, working alongside local government units and other private sector sponsors.
What they’re saying
"We are proud to support multiple initiatives and events across the city, and we commend Davao's forward-looking efforts to promote a healthy and active lifestyle for all," Eduardo Aboitiz, vice president of Aboitiz Equity Ventures’ Synergy Office and president of Apo Agua Infrastructura Inc, said in a press statement on Feb. 4, 2026.
Davao City Administrator Francis Layog echoed the sentiment, saying, “We hope to meet the triathletes with a warm Dabawenyo hospitality and foster camaraderie during our city's chartered anniversary."
Behind the partnership
A ceremonial signing held last month formalized the renewed support, with Eduardo Aboitiz representing the group. Also present was Jokin Aboitiz, first vice president for business development and corporate services of AboitizPower Distribution Utilities, who witnessed the signing.
The Aboitiz Group maintains a strong footprint in Davao City through key infrastructure and utility investments. These include the Apo Agua bulk water supply project, power distribution services under Davao Light and Power Co., and power generation operations through Therma South Inc. and Hedcor Inc.
What’s next
Beyond utilities, the group continues to support Davao through corporate social responsibility programs alongside events like Ironman 70.3.
For the city, hosting the triathlon again underscores its readiness to stage large-scale international events while leveraging sports tourism to support local businesses and community engagement.
As race day approaches, organizers expect the 2026 Ironman 70.3 Davao to further strengthen the city’s profile as a hub for world-class sporting events in Mindanao. —Vanessa Hidalgo | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
