The Sy family conglomerate SM Investments Corp. announced that veteran lawyer and former Finance Department undersecretary Lily K. Gruba has formally joined its board as its fifth independent director.
This follows the Securities and Exchange Commission’s approval to expand the board from 8 to 9 members.
Gruba, the founding partner of Gruba Caganda Advincula Melo & De la Fuente, is also a director of Asia United Bank and Cosco Capital Inc.
She serves as the executive director of the Fr. Joaquin, SJ Institute for Continuing Legal Education and teaches at the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law.
Gruba has held key government positions, including director of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority and undersecretary of the Department of Finance under the term of President Joseph Estrada.
She has been recognized among the top 100 lawyers in the Philippines and was nominated as Southeast Asia’s tax lawyer of the year by the Legal 500 in 2023.
Gruba holds a Bachelor of Laws from Ateneo Law School and a Master of Laws from Georgetown University Law Center.
